I've heard that Yahoo has started ranking small websites better than big sites that have more text content, is that true?

At this moment I can neither validate nor invalidate this theory. I have to run more SEO tests on this topic first.

However, I've seen a website of mine which you could call a "small website" outrank competitors in the Yahoo SERPS for a competitive term with 1.6M+ results. That website contains nearly no spiderable text, not too many inbound links and just a few pages in the index as opposed to the competing websites with a higher PR, more inbound links and more indexed pages.

A theory and one example do not ascertain a change in Yahoo's Search Engine algorithm beyond doubt though, so let's try to confirm this.

Did anyone else notice the same?

I heard that as well. And I also heard that Yahoo is putting more weight on subdomains lately.
