Pagerank - Definition
Google’s Pagerank⢠System is a very complex patented system that measures internet pages dependent on their Link Popularity and assigns a Page Rank from 0 (lowest) to 10 (maximum) accordingly.
Pagerank - Basics
Each external link to a Webpage counts as a vote for that page and depending on the Pagerank of each external page, this vote has more or less weight.
Here’s a basic example:
Site A is linking to site B. This counts as a vote for site B. Site A itself currently has a Pagerank of 0 though, therefore the vote has very few weight.
Site B is linking to site C. This counts as a vote for site C. Site B has a Pagerank of 8, so the vote has quite a lot of weight
.

Pagerank - Calculation
A website’s Pagerank is calculated depending on several factors:
Pagerank Factor 1: The Site’s previous Pagerank
Pagerank Factor 2: The number of inbound links
Pagerank Factor 3: The Pagerank of the pages where the inbound links are from
#1 The Influence of the Site’s own Pagerank
- The higher the own Pagerank, the harder it will be to increase it. -> The Pagerank development occurs non-linear.

The above figure is simplified and for illustration purposes only.
#2 The influence of the number of inbound links
- The more links, the stronger the potential increase in PR.
#3 The Pagerank of the pages where the inbound links are from
- The higher their Pagerank is, the stronger the potential increase in PR.

[…] The “nofollow tag” is a html attribute that was invented by Google in order to prevent or reduce comment spam, especially weblog related. It is used by webmasters on their webpages and tells the search engine spiders not to count links tagged with it for link popularity calculation systems such as the Google Pagerank system ™. When used, the “nofollow” tagged link will not count as a vote for the link target url and will therefore not increase its SERPS (Search Engine Result Pages) ranking in any way. […]
