For quite a while, people in the search engine optimization industry have been talking about “parasite hosts” and “parasite hosting” - but do you understand the meaning of this term? If you are new to search engine optimization, probably not. Read on and in five minutes you will know!

What is a parasite host?

A parasite host is a website which meets these two criteria:

  1. it has a high Google Trust Factor
  2. it offers users to create their own content (e.g. blogs, forums, wikis)

Why the name “parasite host”?

By definition, “Parasitism” is a co-existence of two biological organisms with a non-reciprocal benefit, which means that only one of the two benefits from the co-existence, the other one is being harmed.

So called “Parasite hosts” are often exploited by Black hat SEOs who are spamming within the site by adding external links to their commercial products or services. Similar to biological parasites, the spammers are exploiting the co-existence with the hosting site which is harmed by spam, that’s why exploitable hosts are called “parasite hosts”.

What is the benefit of exploiting parasite hosts?

By creating links from parasite hosts, it is possible to leverage Google Spam Filters, such as the filter commonly called Google Sandbox Effect. The Google Sandbox effect usually filters out low quality (low trust level) links to new websites and therefore temporarily reduces link popularity, preventing many new websites from achieving a good ranking during the sandbox period (around 3-4 months usually).

Beating the Google Sandbox with parasite hosting

Beating the Google Sandbox can be accomplished through the amount of Google Trust which is transferred from the parasite host to the spammer’s website through hyperlinks. A certain amount of Google Trust makes Google’s algorithms identify the spammer’s website as a trusted website as well, therefore relieving it from the Google Sandbox earlier.

Who is exploiting parasite hosts?

Nowadays, especially black hat SEOs and spammers who are reselling products from the pharmaceutical industry rely heavily on black hat SEO techniques such as parasite hosting. Do a search for “buy viagra” on Google and you can see the proof.

Disadvantages of exploiting parasite hosts

Exploiting parasite hosts as a source for Google Trust is generally considered a black hat seo technique and should not be used by any ethical search engine optimizer. Sooner or later, Google will find an automated way to identify and penalize websites that are exploiting parasite hosts. Anyone who exploits parasite hosts may then face consequences such as ranking penalties or in the worst case, a complete domain ban from the Google Index - so be careful.
